Adverts featured in my Underage

These adverts i have chosen to feature in my magazine because they represent the readership, the are primarily aimed at teenagers but not in a typical cliche way. I have feautured a keds advert because of the advert presents people looking youthful, fun, you and fresh. Although the people look youthful they do not look cliche youthful, they look cool and modern which is what my magazine is trying to convey. The harajuku lovers perfume advert represents teenagers in a very quirky, creative, original manner it is youthful but it can be individual and creative also.

My two-page spread

I have created my two-page spread that focuses on the interveiw with my cover gir; actress Mila Kunis. My two-page spread contains a personal insight on Mila Kunis because i felt this personal insight will engage with readers and possibly make Mila more appealing to the readership and enable the readers to relate to her. My two-page spread includes an original image i have taken that imitates Mila Kunis, the girl in the original images's pose is pose is chilled out, cool and collected this is used so the image will comprose with the cool, modern feel of the magazine. The clothing is also trendy and in fashion and the person on the original image although she looks cool and edgy, she also does not look intimidating thus making her more relatable with the readership. The image i have used is on the right hand side of the spread but continues onto the left-hand side of the page so the image can be the primary focus of the spread. The text is not in convetional interveiw for but in article form because i did not want my magazine to follow conventions, the text not lined up and asymmetirical but it continues on to the image. The text is dark purple to agree with the edgy feel and the title text is white font highlighted with black to give a cool, edgy feel. The title states"Mila takes centre stage" to siginfy Mila's recent succces and rise to stardom.

Underage Cover

“Underage” magazine appeals to our target audience because of the styling of the letters. The letters are curved so they represent our target audience which are prominently female teenagers. Although the letters our curved it is not entirely feminine as the font is black so it has a certain edge with agrees with what our magazine is trying to represent. The barcode of the magazine is at a bottom right corner of my cover so that it does not distract the viewer and so that content of my front page can entirely be the focus.
The cover lines of the magazine are bright and creative so they can represent the magazine and they can attract the target audience, the font of one particular cover line uses red font that looks very inventive and individual as it looks very playful. The photo of Mila Kunis I have used is her standing in the centre being a brick wall. I have used this photo because it represents edginess and individuality. In this photo she is wearing dramatic makeup to signify her edginess and to look creative and trendy. She is also wearing quirky, trendy clothing to symbolize what the magazine represents as one of the magazine’s primary focuses is fashion and in the shot the clothing represents that.
The pose that Mila has is very chilled out as she is slanted against the wall, she looks cool and collected in this photo also representing the magazine because the magazine is not conventional as it is not similar to most teen magazines because the cover model does not appear to be smiling and active instead she looks edgy and cool. I have used particular colours and graphics because I wanted my magazine to look imaginative and creative so I used a wide-range of fonts to signify that, I wanted to use a wide variety of colours but I then settled on four colours because I did not wanted my magazine to look over done, messy and cheap. I used cool, underrated writing because I did not want my magazine too look cheap and exaggerated. The primary colours I used for my magazine are grey, black, white and red. I used red to attract the readers with large fonts, to make it look more individual. I used black, white and grey to compromise with the photo I have used to the cover can have an overall theme. I think my magazine cover looks similar to Nylon magazine covers because of the overall edginess of both magazine covers as they both are very individual and unconventional.

My magazine that i have now created is called underage magazine. It is a magazine created specifically to represent the readership; teen culture. The magazine i have created represents teen culture in a very uncovnetional, uncliche, liberal manner. Underage magazine is created to inspired readers and encourage readers to explore their invididuality and creativity. I looked into typical teen magazines such as teen vogue but i realised i did not want to produce a magazine that was cliche and typical. I wanted to produce a magazine representing teen culture but i wanted to be edgy, cool and contemporary aswell.

Underage Magazine Evaluation

I have created a magazine cover for my magazine idea called underage. Underage magazine is a magazine that is aimed at the teenager’s particularly teenage girls. The magazine represents the teen generation by included music, fashion, film, real life issues that represent teenagers. This magazine differs from other teen magazine because it is more artsy and liberal than other magazines for the teen generation. It is not cliché and stereotypical.

I have almost completed my front cover, I have almost finished the text displayed on the front cover, I think the fonts and the images I have used are relevant to the magazine because they are creative and represent the magazines look and the theme and also the target audience. I have used a large variety of fonts and different colours to display creativity and originality. I have also used fonts from websites for my ‘2010’ and ‘the music issue’. I have also uploaded the mast-head.

Fashion Magazine

Fashion Magazine [Conventions]:The typical conventions we would expect in a fashion/womens lifestyles magazine is articles about fashion and numerous pages about new trends, style, designers and whats on the catwalk. The magazines give you advice on how to dress and whats in fashion and also involve high fashion photo shoots. Beyond fashion, the magazines sometiemes also use celebrities and tabloids but they particulary use lifestyle of women as a selling point publishing articles on economy, arts, design. For example Vogue described as 'the worlds most influental fashion magazine' is most famous as a presenter for high fashion and high society and womens lifestyle. Each issue focuses on fashion and sometimes the celebrity on the front cover, interveiwing them and making them the centre and selling point of the magazine. They also publish writings on art, culture, politics and ideas ,targeting audiences of women around 25-45 typically a working business woman who can relate to the ideas presented in vogue.

Underage Magazine

The font title that is going to be used for the title on our magazine cover. We chose this font because it will appeal to our target audience because of the way the curved letters our styled and it is also quite feminine which i think will appeal to the audience because they are female. We decided it was the right font because we thought it was stand out the most and it had the boldest, most eye catching font. We also think that this font will appeal to the target audience most. We chose this title name underage because it will appeals to the target audience because our target audience is the teen generation that is under 18 therefore underage. Our magazine is most centre on teenage girls but there can be elements in there for teenage boys. It focuses on teenage culture and lifestyle also fashion, beauty, music and celebrities. The 3 page magazine will feature the contents page and a two page spread on the person on the cover. The two page spread will feature a short article about the person on the cover then an interveiw with her.

Underage Magazine

I am going to produce my magazine and it will be inspired by Nylon Magazine. I liked Nylon magazine's conventions because I thought the magazine represented teenage culture in a very creative original way. I liked how the magazine was creative, artsy and fun but also sophisticated as it included high fashion and important issues. I would like my magazine to convey to readers an important, positive message but to also be kept original, youthful and creative. I also liked how Nylon magazine was not a typical cliche teen magazine and that it is kept fresh and cool. I would like to feature new, fresh, cool music as one of the focuses in my magazine because I would like my readership to explore new music and i have chosen Mila Kunis as my front cover because she would engage with readers as she is focused currently in the media and because of her fun, cool persona.

Nylon contents page conventions

This is nylon magazines contents page. The contents page has a large image on it that is the centre of the contents page of a person in a playful pose, this represents youth in the way the person is posing and his appearance. The font of the contents page its place in a long list and its quite bland, this is not common in most contents pages and it represents originality and that the magazine is very artsy and liberal. The simplicity of the contents page is quite deliberate, i think because of individuality of the page and also its attempt to not be too cliche therefore keeping in touch with their readership and young, cool teen target audience. I also think the font is simple, so that the image is made the centre of the magazine and the main attraction.

Annotation of Nylon

I have annotated the main features of Nylon magazine because this is the closest magazine to the one i will be producing. The masthead is the title of the magazine usually placed at the top of the page, this masthead looks very creative and original. It is designed that way to appeal to their teenage market, making it look creative, trendy and cool. The masthead features bright colours making it look attractive to the readership and representing originality, fun and youth. The masthead also has a certain edge to it and it is created to look very bold and eyecatching which appeals to the target audience because it signifys that the magazine itself is very bold and that is has no boundaries. The coverline is also very bold and eye-catching, it is designed to look creative and very out there and cool. The USP for this magazine is very important because it signifys the theme of the magazine and it is also highlighted in yellow signifying that it is one of the main features of the issue. The magazine itself is very liberal and out-there, it is designed to show that is represents young, cool teenagers and that it has no boundaries and its not designed to be very cliche and unoriginal.

Teen Magazines.

Teen magazines are aimed at a readership of 12-18 primarily young teenage girls. Teen magazines are designed to attract, inspire and entertain young girls using young teen icons as a primary selling point. The typical conventions of a teen magazine is that it includes a sample of makeup or jewellery free which is used as a unique selling point, it would usually be well known make-up brand to the readership that represents them by using bright colours and fun make-up that the readership would be attracted to. The make-up would usually be something the teenager would buy and would use. Teen magazine would also appeal to their readership by including teen celebrity gossip, this is appealing to the readership because they include teen icons that the teenager is very familiar with and possibly is a fan of, they include the gossip to make the readership feel more involved with their icons and feel more in touch with them. The magazine included problem and advice pages that feature readers sending in their problems, this is used to the readership can relate to the problems featured in the magazines as everyday teenage problems are featured in the magazine, this aspect also brings a sense of realism to the magazine. This is also used so the teenagers can use the advice presented in the magazine if they are in similar situations. The tone of the magazine is usually very happy, positive and light because of the readership, teen magazines are used to inspire their readership not just to entertain them so they tone of the magazine is positive and encouraging. The language used in the magazines also resembles the readership, so the reader can relate to it, it is very casual, informal and fun, so the readership will feel in touch with the magazine and relate to it. The magazine also features affordable fashion from high-street shops that the readership usually shops at and the style of clothes would usually imitate a teen icon, the readership would be inspired to dress like them. The magazines masthead is usually bright, bold and its usually a fun colour, this is used so the audience would be attracted to it as the colours would usually be associated with typical fun young teenagers. The masthead also fits in with the magazines light, positive tone. The cover model would usually be a teen icon again so it can appeal to the readership, they would typically be fresh faced and minimal make-up to appear young and youthful, so they can represent the readership in a positive way and the readership can relate to the celebrity. There are maybe sub-genres for teen magazine to appeal to a wider audience of teens highlighting every aspect of the teen generation. Teen vogue magazine fits into the teen genre but it is possibly more mature and sophisticated as it is modelled after high-fashion bible Vogue.

Teen Vogue is a teen magazine that is a version of vogue targeted at the teen generation to appeal to a larger target audience and for vogue to have a larger market. The magazine specializes most in fashion and teenage lifestyles. The magazine resembles vogue in terms of the fashion aspect of it, featuring high fashion and newest trends. They feature young fun teenagers and the articles that are especially targeted at teenagers in terms of the language that they use and the issues that they write about. They also use celebrities and music that appeal to the target audience, for example they have featured twilight numerous times because of the popularity and the phenomenon that has come out of it. The magazines uses young popular celebrities that the reader would usually be interested in, they also use up and coming actors or musicians to attract the reader to find out more. Teen vogue also writes articles about normal teenage issues that the reader can relate to and the adverts featured in the magazine resemble vogue due to the high fashion but they are also targeted at young people due to the use of keds a trainer brand that is mostly aimed at teenagers and that present the trainers as young, hip and trendy.

Gossip/Tabloid magazines

Entertainment/Gossip Magazines are typically aimed at a 18-40 readership and primarily aimed at women but not as directly as in other women’s magazines. The magazines primarily focus on celebrity gossip, sometimes fashion and real-life. The magazine is almost entirely celebrity focused, featuring scandalous stories of celebrity’s as the primary selling point. The magazines articles are usually exaggerated, to attract the readership, engaging them with fresh, new, scandalous celebrity gossip. The fashion section of the magazine would usually imitate celebrity fashion usually somebody that the readership inspire to be like, they would usually offer cheap alternates that would fit in the readerships budget. The magazines language would usually be exaggerated, as it is purposely made to look exciting, the language is purposely made to look informal and less sophisticated due to its readership. Its made to look informal because the magazine wants to relate to the target audience by making it look casual, chatty so the magazine itself is more approachable.

The masthead of the magazine is typically in primary, bright colours, usually informal font, to attract its readership as the readership is young working class women, it also indicates that the magazine is not a serious magazine and it is created not to inspire women such as other fashion or lifestyle magazines do but to entertain them. The banners of the magazine are usually bright, exaggerated and informal, typically include exclamation marks. This is used to engage readers as the font is eye-catching and relates to the readership in many ways as the readership is aimed at working class women, the banner is not sophisticated and not very formal. The celebrity on the front cover would usually be a paparazzi shot to make the readership feel more involved as they might relate to the celebrity as a paparazzi shot is typically when the celebrity is looking normal, the cover might feature a celebrity looking bad and the banner might include gossip about the celebrity, this is used to make readers feel more involved with the celebrities personal life and the magazine is used as escapism for the readership entirely focusing on other people’s lives as opposed to theirs. Heat magazine for example is the uk's biggest selling tabloid and entertainment magazine, it features the most scandalous celebrity gossip and tends to exaggerate the headline celebrity gossip by purposely using exaggerated language and paparazzi shots to intrigue the readership, to entertain and make them feel more involved and in on the gossip.
